Education
The
Conservancy sets up an exhibit every fall at the County Fair and at other
venues throughout the year. We sponsor a yearly Schoolchildren's Conservation
Writing Contest designed to give students the opportunity to express what
they feel is the most important landscape, natural area, or historic site
to save in the county. We also give awards to students whose entries in
the countywide annual Science Fair merit recognition for their sound environmental
content.
Charles County Heritage
Award
At a ceremony at the annual membership meeting, the Conservancy conferred its Charles County Heritage Award on Peter F. Murphy in honor of his support for protecting open space and the county's natural and historic areas. Murphy donated a perpetual conservation easement on his property, Greenweigh, on the Potomac River west of Bryans Road. One of the Conservancy's founders and an early member of the Board of Directors, he has dedicated much of his life to public service. He is now in his second term as a Delegate in the Maryland General Assembly.
Previous Heritage Award recipients include:
- Carol Ghebelian, long active in the Southern Maryland Audubon
Society and Friends of Chapman State Park;
- Elmer Biles, whose many contributions to the community include
sharing extensive research on Charles County's early history;
- George Wilmot, widely known for his dedication to
protecting Mattawoman Creek.
